Larry Costello (1925-2017)

Born in Dec. 12, 1924, Larry Costello served for a total of 25 years in the Royal Canadian Naval Volunteer Reserve (RCNVR) for war-time missions and in the Royal Canadian Navy for peace-time missions. He was enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy at the age of 16, and fought during the Battle of the Atlantic and the Korean War.

Costello volunteered at the Windsor Historical Society for 14 years, and at the United Church of Canada Downtown Mission of Windsor Inc. for the past 15 years. For the Mission, he volunteered to drive around for gathered food items for the agency, and helped the organization save transportation costs and improve public relations.

He received the 125th Anniversary of the Confederation of Canada Medal, a silver-coloured medal that recognizes those who have made a significant contribution to citizens of Canada. One would certainly recognize Larry Costello as an advocate for veterans in the Essex County. From his service at the Battle of the Atlantic, he flew to the Battle of the Atlantic commemoration and met Queen Elizabeth II and Prince Phillip on that occasion.
